Bike Tours
in the Natural Park and Surroundings
Sobrestany is nestled at the foot of the Montgrí Massif, but it also borders a vast plain dotted with small villages, stretching all the way to Roses. These villages are connected by country roads and, thankfully, numerous field paths perfect for long bike rides.
From Sobrestany to Bellcaire and Verges
The ride from Sobrestany to Verges is particularly recommended on Sundays, as that's when the flea market takes place in Verges. Across from the flea market, you can grab a coffee and a sandwich at the Fonda. It's loud and bustling, frequented by both market-goers and vendors. Pro tip: If you want to eat, sit at a table—the counter is for drinks only.
To get from Sobrestany to Bellcaire, take the old country road towards Ullà to avoid the heavily trafficked new road. In Bellcaire, go straight through the village and take the field path along the water canal. You'll encounter the occasional tractor, but it's mostly quiet. Passersby greet you with a friendly "Déu" (hello). The route is flat and short, so it’s not very tiring, but there are longer alternatives on Google Maps.
From Sobrestany to l'Escala, and optionally to Empuries or Cala Montgó
One of the shortest routes is the field path to l'Escala, ideal for daily shopping at the French baker Elies or one of the supermarkets (Carrefour, Aldi, Mercadona, LIDL). The ride to the village entrance takes about 15 minutes along a wide, hardly used field path. After Torre Ferrana, turn left towards l'Escala. If you go further, the path becomes steeper and rockier—a mountain bike and a good tire repair kit are essential. This isn't the case on the way to l'Escala.
At the entrance, there's an ALDI. From there, you can take the paved roads of the village to Empúries with its beautiful Muscleres beaches (Shell Beaches). The route to Cala Montgó is a bit more challenging, with constant ups and downs.
On your way back, avoid the Escala-Bellcaire road—cars can zoom by at 140km/h on this narrow two-lane road. Instead, take the safer field paths behind the road.
From Sobrestany to Ullà
The ride to Ullà, a village near Torroella, is particularly worthwhile during the Fira de la Poma d'Ullà (Apple Festival). Even outside festival times, the trip is enjoyable for the diverse scenery.
The route starts from Sobrestany on the lightly trafficked road to Bellcaire, then heads south towards Torroella de Montgrí, passing the Santa Caterina Monastery. The road is poorly paved and sees little traffic, ending with a gentle uphill slope.
From Sobrestany through Ullà and along the old river path to Torroella
This half-hour trip goes through Ullà (as described above) to Torroella. In Ullà, cross the main road and continue on a field path along the old riverbank to Torroella.
